Beijing, China, 27 April 2006 - MobileAware, the world leader in enabling the creation and delivery of mobile data services, will today participate in the opening of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)’s first office in China. Heralded as a major development in expanding the reach of international Web standards and realizing the full potential of the Web, W3C’s latest office will be based in the School of Computer Science & Engineering at Beihang University in Beijing. Dr. Steve Bratt, CEO of W3C, as well as representatives of leading industries and research institutes in China will attend the event, which comprises two days of presentations and panel discussions. Mr. Kirk Tang, Director Asia-Pacific at MobileAware, will assist in presenting an overview of W3C’s Mobile Web Initiative, of which MobileAware is a founding sponsor. W3C staff will also present work on the consortium’s Internationalization Activity, the Rich Web Client Activity, the Semantic Web Activity and the Voice Browser Activity. MobileAware has been operating in Asia-Pacific since 2003 and has experienced strong growth in the region through strategic partnerships with BEA Systems and Ericsson. To service the market demand for consumer mobile services and enterprise mobility solutions, MobileAware opened its regional headquarters in Beijing in January 2005 and currently counts China Mobile, China Telecom, Chunghwa Telecom, China Unicom, Singapore Ministry of Defence and Telstra among its customers. MobileAware has long been a member of the W3C and is currently an active member of the W3C Advisory Committee as well as a lead participant in the Device Independent Working Group (DIWG). Recognizing the importance of mobile devices to the Web, MobileAware became a founding sponsor of W3C’s Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in May 2005. MobileAware chairs the MWI Device Description Working Group, whose aim it is to create a global repository of device knowledge to support adaptation and thereby encourage higher-quality content for the mobile Web. "MobileAware has a proud association with W3C and through active participation in both the Device Independence and Device Description Working Groups, we play a leadership role in the strategic direction of the mobile Web," commented Brian Kinane, Executive Vice President at MobileAware. “With record Internet usage patterns, particularly from mobile devices, China has emerged as a world-leading innovator of Web technologies and applications. It is important that this expertise is relayed back to international standards bodies such as W3C, and we look forward to engaging Chinese industrial and academic communities to make this happen.” More information on the W3C China office opening can be found here.
