MobileAware and Air France-KLM have brought to market the new standard for airline mobile care services. Available from the latest touch-screen and smartphone devices, as well as many more basic models, flyers can now book flights, check-in, generate boarding passes, see flight information, manage their Flying Blue accounts and purchase upgraded services such as additional baggage, all from the palms of their hands. Air France-KLM is the first carrier to launch the mobile “Manage My Booking” service, including a re-booking facility, greatly simplifying passengers’ interaction with the airline.

The mobile websites are available in ten languages for KLM and nine for Air France, and can be accessed on mobile devices at mobile.airfrance.com and mobile.klm.com. Their respective free applications can also be downloaded from the Apple App Store and Android App Market.

“As major players in the area of mobility, our ambition is to offer our customers their personal travel assistant. We are constantly innovating to better serve our customers,” said Christian Herzog, Senior Vice President Marketing, Air France-KLM. “Collaborating with MobileAware has helped us to develop mobile services in new and innovative ways,” added Martijn van de Zee, Senior Vice President eCommerce, Air France-KLM.

Since their launch, the Air France-KLM mobile sites and apps have seen exponential increases in usage and revenue generated with services such as mobile electronic booking and mobile check-in. The companies are working jointly on new services and features to be launched during 2011, such as “Time to Think” and promotions. MobileAware delivers the mobile experience through a flexible, managed services solution to Air France-KLM.

“MobileAware is proud to partner with Air France and KLM on their mobile services; MobileAware provides the Group with a superior user experience, and a solid framework for implementing their industry-leading mobile strategy,” said Armin Gebauer, CEO of MobileAware. “We look forward to a long relationship and continuing to pioneer new services to be brought to the airline market.”

Mike Isaac writes a great article in “Wired” about the demise of Adobe Flash in the mobile world:

“In an abrupt about-face in its mobile software strategy, Adobe will soon cease developing its Flash Player plug-in for mobile browsers. Adobe said it would abandon mobile flash development, nudge developers to the Adobe Air platform and wholeheartedly back what had been a rival approach — HTML5.

‘HTML5 is now universally supported on major mobile devices, in some cases exclusively,’ Adobe VP Danny Winokur said in a clear reference to Apple’s rejection of Flash support on its dominant iOS devices: the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. ‘This makes HTML5 the best solution for creating and deploying content in the browser across mobile platforms. We are excited about this, and will continue our work with key players in the HTML community, including Google, Apple, Microsoft and RIM, to drive HTML5 innovation they can use to advance their mobile browsers.’

Word first circulated in an e-mail sent to Adobe partners on Tuesday evening. The e-mail was obtained and first reported on by ZDNet.

And with that, Adobe signaled the end of the Flash era on at least the mobile web, as Steve Jobs predicted.”

Leena Rao of TechCrunch writes an interesting article about an interview with Mark Zuckerberg, in which he highlights the benefits of starting up in Boston:

“Yesterday, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg took the stage at Y Combinator’s Startup School in a candid interview with Y Combinator Partner Jessica Livingston. You can watch the full interview here, and it starts around the 43 minute mark, and lasts for roughly 40 minutes. If you have some time to spare, it’s well worth a look.

Zuck revealed a number of fascinating things about entrepreneurship, founding Facebook, and product development, but one of the more interesting (and surprising points) came at the end of the interview when Livingston asked him what he would do different if he could go back in time. Zuck replied: If I were starting now I would do things very differently. I didn’t know anything. In Silicon Valley, you get this feeling that you have to be out here. But it’s not the only place to be. If I were starting now, I would have stayed in Boston. [Silicon Valley] is a little short-term focused and that bothers me.”

MobileAware today formally launches an Open Source effort to create a W3C Device Description Repository (DDR) technology for all Web platforms. The maDDR Project builds on the Web standard that MobileAware helped to create within W3C and will be freely available to all Web developers. The project welcomes contributions from experienced developers. Technology from The maDDR Project will enable Web sites to access collections of device information, and thereby make sensible decisions on how to respond to users.

The launch coincides with the W3C’s publication of the Mobile Web Applications Best Practices in which the DDR plays a significant role.

Launching the project, Dr Rotan Hanrahan said “we have a team of contributors from MobileAware bringing their expertise and experience to the project, and they look forward to working with the rest of the Web community.”

Borrowing from some of the technology within MobileAware’s MIS suite, the first target is a Java solution. This will be followed by solutions for other platforms early in 2011. The software from The maDDR Project will provide a consistent way to access any source of device descriptions.

On the matter of data sources, Dr Hanrahan noted: “maDDR will be completely open in terms of data sources. With the help of extensible binding we will be able to support a wide range of sources, including free and commercial repositories. MobileAware will also provide a starter pack with the first proper release of maDDR, with no usage restrictions, so that Web developers can quickly get the benefits of maDDR.”

MobileAware is launching this Open Source project as part of its effort to bring adaptive technology to the whole Web. The first step is to make Web sites aware of the delivery context, including the capabilities and constraints of the browser and device sending requests to the site. The W3C DDR specification provides a standard approach to solving this problem, and The maDDR Project is the first Open Source project to be dedicated to the challenge.

For more details, visit www.maddr.org.

Why not simply rely on WURFL/WALL?

MobileAware is occasionally asked why we maintain our own device repository and a team of device profiling engineers instead of simply relying on Wireless Universal Resource File (WURFL). Likewise, Wireless Abstraction Library (WALL) is occasionally mentioned as an alternative to MobileAware’s Mobile Interaction Server product.

We believe WURFL contains a lot of useful device information and when combined with WALL is a competent free starter kit for the mobile development community. It provides a simple technology that allows developers to gain entry into the mobile Web. As such, WURFL is a valuable service to the developer community and deserves to be acknowledged for its efforts. Going higher, however, involves a lot more effort, growing development and maintenance costs, and constant quality concerns.

It is not all good news. WURFL relies on open source donations from community contributors. It has an unmanaged, unguaranteed process for contributing and maintaining data. All contributions are welcome, regardless of origin or validity, with potential consequences for the quality of the collected data and growing inconsistencies across and within device profiles. The unavoidable inaccuracies in data cause anomalous results in rendering by WALL or any other solutions relying solely on WURFL to drive content optimization. With no SLA around data collection or guarantees regarding availability of profiles for devices entering the market, enterprises should be wary of offering commercial services relying on the data. Further, there is no mechanism to request addition of specific devices, no tools for administering WURFL, and it has not been designed or optimized for performance. WURFL has helped many to get started in the mobile Web, but it also highlights how difficult it is to manage the growing device diversity to exacting standards demanded by professional organizations.

MobileAware is different. MobileAware’s Device Repository, in contrast, is a professionally maintained and thoroughly validated device repository with device profiles ascertained by MobileAware’s dedicated device profiling team through a rigorous profiling process. Profiling is based on a number of sources: hands-on device testing (including installation of midlets that can be used to determine capabilities where appropriate), UAProf (with inaccuracies corrected), feedback from customers, etc. Iterative hands-on and automated QA testing ensures consistency between attributes within a profile and across profiles. Device Repository Updates are made available through online update service at least monthly, with 72 hour guaranteed profiling of new devices available by SLA. The Device Repository Manager tool allows for easy customization and management of the repository.

MobileAware’s Mobile Interaction Server has been designed and implemented to provide the best user experience possible on each mobile device, provides industrial-grade performance and scalability, and is backed by MobileAware’s 24×7 customer support organization. It has evolved over 10 years, leveraging feedback from dozens of operator and enterprise deployments. In production, MIS caches the Device Repository in memory, further enabling optimal performance.

What if you just want to try WURFL? If you are not already present in the mobile Web and want a taste of what it is like, adding WURFL to your toolkit will be a useful experience. We advise that you consider using standardized interfaces so that you have a migration path to professional solutions if/when your needs exceed WURFL’s capacity. Remember, if you are using WURFL then it reasonable to expect that you will contribute some data to them in return for helping you get started.

If you have already been kick-started into the mobile Web with the help of WURFL and now want a professional solution, look no further than MobileAware.
